CHIC CHAT

What’s Happening at CHIC?

Wednesday 22nd January saw the latest CHIC Seminar – The Future of Heating.

There were many thought provoking presentations throughout the day, all on the topic of what the future has in store for heating in the social housing sector and inspired by the ambitious target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The day was a great success with strong member support and some great feedback from our membership “It was an extremely valuable day with good information and well delivered.”

Ken Harrison, Black Country Housing Group

We would like to thank all representatives from ADEY, Laker BMS and Worcester Bosch for their outstanding presentations. Thanks to Worcester Bosch for hosting the event, and to all delegates who attended. There was some great market insight and It was inspiring to hear about the latest innovations from market leading organisations.

News from the Sector

The highly anticipated response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry - Phase 1 Report has now been released, originally published on 30th October 2019. The report sets out the actions to significantly reduce the risk of such a tragedy occurring again and to ensure justice for all those who were affected. Amongst the necessary steps was the introduction of the Fire Safety Bill – to include building owners full transparency with fire and rescue services, national guidelines for carrying out evacuations of high rise residential buildings, research into ‘Stay Put’ and effective communication with residents to reiterate the importance of self-closing devices on all fire doors. You can read the full response here

Phase 2 of the inquiry began on 27th January, which should see more research into the months and years leading up to the tragedy and the micro steps which lead to the decision to implement the combustible cladding.  Over 200,000 unseen documents are to be released over the next 18 months to support the investigation to come to a final conclusion.

The new public procurement thresholds have been published by the European Commission, which was effective from 1st January 2020, as follows:

  • Public Works Contracts - £4,773,252
  • Supplies and Services to Central Government - £122,976
  • Supplies and Services to Others - £189,330
  • Light Touch Regime - £663,540

Do flexible working hours and hot-desking create hostile working environments? It is becoming increasingly more common for organisations to incorporate hot-desking to allow for better integration and increased levels of communication. However, recent studies have shown that this can cause increased levels of stress and lower morale.

CHIC has historically taken a more traditional approach to the office and have designated seating arrangements for team members, but with the nature of our managed approach to our membership, supported by recent expansion, this may change in the near future. Does your organisation adopt hot-desking? Let us know your thoughts at marketing@chicltd.co.uk

News from the Supply Chain

Myson manufacture a wide range of radiators, including a number of panel radiators, available through CHIC frameworks. The Select Compact for example has undergone years of development and research processes to establish the optimum design for a compact radiator. It delivers impressive outputs whilst using a low water content and being lightweight; it uses less steel to reduce its carbon footprint. The Select Compact, along with all Myson panel radiators, are quality guaranteed with a 10yr warranty from the date of purchase, have all been tested to BS EN 442 standards and carry the BS Kitemark.

Their extensive product portfolio includes a range of electric heating solutions that are designed to be functional and stylish, offering heating alternatives to areas where there is no gas supply or no heating pipes available. These not only provide instant heat on demand but are cost effective and can complement existing hydronic heating systems or act independently. Electric heating options are ideal for retro fit projects or new builds as they are easy to install and require no plumbing, so you can also add more at any time. They have a range of classic panel as well as designer electric radiator options available.

They also offer underfloor heating solutions, again to help where space is limited and quality is expected. Their cost effective Punch Packs are an ideal single room underfloor heating solution. The underfloor heating department at Myson offer a bespoke, free, 48hr quotation service.
